Set in a small Texas town, anytime, USA. The reunion of a family gathered to await the imminent death of their patriarch, who has recently suffered a physically as well as mentally disabling stroke. He's partially paralyzed but can still walk and get into trouble, and has moments of coherency. In essence, however, it is not the story of the impending demise of the father or the drafting of the will, but of a rebirth of the spirit of the family unit. Without becoming ponderous, losing a sense of humor or pandering to timeworn clichés about Texans or Texas drawls, the story shares many elements of a good summer novel: it's a fast, delicious, easy read with funny moments, tense moments, touching moments with characters you care about.and perhaps even know. There is the spoiled younger sister, who's still beautiful.from a distance. who goes through husbands like some women go through nail polish, the strong-willed "spinster" sister who is the town beautician (so knows all the scoop) and still lives at home, the older sister who married "up" and became a preacher's wife - very Christian.with a bite, the feisty, household ruling gramma, the fat redneck trash collecting brother, not very nice and a little on the abusive side, and his wife who is "temporarily" overweight, with a slight self esteem problem from living with the slob.but losing sixty pounds (or perhaps 300?) can always boost a girl's confidence. This is a consistently funny and occasionally touching play about Texans being Texans.
